Bill Gates, William Henry Gates III, is an American entrepreneur, software developer, investor, and philanthropist. He was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington to William H. Gates Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates.
Gates grew up in a wealthy family and attended Lakeside School, a private preparatory school in Seattle. It was at Lakeside where Gates was first introduced to computers, and he quickly became interested in programming. He would spend hours studying and tinkering with the school's computer system.
In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard University to study pre-law but dropped out two years later to found Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen. The two created a programming language for the Altair 8800, a personal computer kit, which would become the basis of Microsoft's first product.
In 1980, Microsoft entered into an agreement with IBM to develop an operating system for its personal computers. Microsoft's DOS (Disk Operating System) became the industry standard for IBM-compatible personal computers, and Gates became a billionaire at the age of 31 and made his name around the world.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Microsoft continued to dominate the personal computer software industry, developing new products such as Windows and Office.
